Where is the Gem?

by Leslie Sann

“The gem cannot be polished without friction, nor man perfected without trials.”

~ Chinese Proverb

The conscious mind can only process a very small amount of incoming data. You can choose to use the mind’s filtering to sort through the incoming, screen out what is not serving you, focusing on that which supports you in seeing the gem amidst your circumstances.

When I reflect on my life, I am especially aware of the gifts that came from me NOT getting what I thought I wanted. I’m old enough to have had enough experiences to realize though I may wish the experience was other than it is, that finding a way to engage with what is occurring and navigate through successfully actually has changed me into more of the person I’d prefer to be. Thus, I am actually grateful for the experience I originally thought I didn’t want! Go figure.

I am getting more and more adept at choosing gratitude rather than the grumps when life doesn’t show up according to my plans. I wonder, might I have been spared and how is what unfolded even better than what I thought I wanted.

What about you?

  • What wasn’t there for you though perhaps difficult at the time, you realize was a gift?
  • What was the gift that was given?

Find that gift and you will have discovered the gem!

Blessings,
