When Life Does What Life Does

By Leslie Sann

How you relate to the issue is the issue.

~ Ron Hulnick

John Lennon is famous for saying, “Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.” Have you ever noticed how true that is, that unexpected things occur no matter how skilled you are at planning or how you try to control outcomes? What happens to you when the unforeseen shows up? How do you react? How do you relate to the experience?

This is a key question because, contrary to what many believe, the event is not the issue. How you relate to yourself while you go through the experience is the issue!

We’re all born, we live, we sleep, we eat, we breathe, we die. It’s the same for everyone. So why don’t we experience life the same? How is it we react differently to situations? When it snows, some people get cold, and other people go skiing. The difference in these outward reactions is the result of the internal process.

Look at it this way: If we have a filter that says life is against us, then we will tend to be worn down and diminished by life. However, when our point of view is that life is for us and that everything that happens contributes to our learning, growth and upliftment, resilience, initiative, and empowerment naturally occur.

With this attitude, we will see a gift, a higher good in everything that occurs. There is something for us to discover, uncover, and learn. When thrown out of balance, we can move back into our lives more easily from an attitude of curiosity and discovery. As soon as we choose this perspective, our attitude shifts from upset to expansion, creativity and resourcefulness.

That doesn’t mean our tire won’t go flat, we won’t get sick, or the people we love won’t die. It doesn’t mean that life won’t keep doing what it does. It simply means how you relate to your life—well—that is your life.

Your responses to life will either bring you down or empower you. How you relate to your experiences is the life you create. That’s your choice. You can’t control what life brings to you. You can influence it. You can invite experiences you’d like to have into your life. You can do your best, yet situations outside your influence still happen.

When life does what life does, what CHOICE will you make?
