Drift Happens
By Leslie Sann
You cannot change the wind,
but you can adjust the sails.
—Aristotle
Did you know that 90–95% of the time a plane is off course on its way from here to there? It’s true. That’s why all that navigational equipment is on board—to make continual corrections every time the plane drifts.
Think about it: the plane is off course most of the time. Yet it still arrives in LA. Why? Because it has committed to its destination. You bought a ticket, and by golly that plane is going to get you there.
Life works the same way. We commit—to more intimacy, greater happiness, deeper job satisfaction. Then we drift. We argue with a spouse, sink into depression, or grumble at work. What happened? We drifted.
No problema. Like the plane, the answer is to correct course. Recommit and keep moving.
The issue isn’t the drift—drifts happen. The issue is judgment. We judge ourselves or others for drifting. But when the airplane drifts, you don’t hear the crew arguing about whose fault it is
When we judge, we get stuck—locked in a battle with reality. Now the drift becomes drama, and our creative energy gets wasted on the fight instead of fueling what we truly want.
Drifts happen.
What to do?
Shift. Re-focus on where you are going. Correct your course. And keep moving.
